If you are reading this article, then you are probably already a fan of MyFitnessPal and use it regularly. But entering weight data manually can be a bit of a chore so you are looking for smart scale that syncs data with the app. While there is an Under Armour smart scale (Under Armour is the parent company of MyFitnessPal), unfortunately there isn’t a specific MyFitnessPal scale designed just for the app. But don’t worry – you have many different smart scales from different manufacturers that have designed their products to work with MyFitnessPal.
What do we mean by being ‘compatible with’ or ‘sync with’ MyFitnessPal?
This essentially means that the ‘native’ app that comes with the smart scale has been designed to exchange data with MyFitnessPal. All smart scale manufacturers have their own app. Nokia scales have Nokia Health Mate, the Under Armour scale has UA Record, Fitbit Aria has the Fitbit app, and so on. As long as that app has been integrated with MyFitnessPal by their company, then you will be able to send weight data to MyFitnessPal. So it is an indirect link to MyFitnessPal and needs to be set up properly. The process to do this is usually pretty simple though. The important thing is that you always check if the scale’s app has indeed been integrated with MyFitnessPal. Which is what we are trying to do with this post – all scales here and their native app have been confirmed as integrated partners of MyFitnessPal
Comparing Smart Scales
Once you know that the scales can sync data with MyFitnessPal, you can then start to think about other smart scale features:
What do you want to measure? There are basically two types of smart scales – those that only measure weight (and BMI usually) and those that also measure things like body fat and other body composition metrics. The scales that measure the advanced metrics use a technology called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Scales with BIA cost more though and there are issues about accuracy with these scales. However, if used under consistent conditions they can be useful for tracking overall progress over time, even if exact measurements aren’t 100% correct. Keep in mind that MyFitnessPal only stores weight data so you may have to monitor the other metrics within the native app itself.
Wifi or Bluetooth connectivity – Connectivity is usually via wifi or bluetooth. Some scales offer both. If you are using wifi the scale is sending data to the apps via your internet connection and the cloud, and if you are using bluetooth it is sending the data directly to your phone. If you do not have good wifi access in your bathroom you may want a bluetooth enabled scale.
Display – what is the size of the display and is there backlighting? This can effect how well you can see the results. But it’s also about aesthetics. Some displays make things more personalised with your name and/or emoticons to reflect how well you are progressing against your goals.
Platform size – if you have larger feet or mobility issues, you may need a larger platform.
5 smart scales compatible with MyFitnessPal
Under Armour UA Scale
A good option for MyFitnessPal is to go with UnderArmour’s own product, the UnderArmour UA Scale. By keeping your scale within the UA ecosystem you are ensuring that you are future-proofing yourself against any compatibility or integration issues. You you can also purchase the scale as a part of the complete UA Healthbox system which comes with the scale, wristband, and chest strap, all connected wirelessly to interface with the MyFitnessPal app. Purchasing the UA Healthbox also give you 3 free months of MyFitnessPal Premium.
The scale itself has a sleek design, and can track your body weight, body fat percentage, and progress towards you weight loss goal. It connects via Wi-Fi to your phone, and can recognize up to eight different users. It has an easy-to-read LED screen. All this means that the scale is easy to use and accurate for helping you track your own progress towards your goals, as well as the progress of your spouse or other people you live with.
The wristband tracks sleep, heart rate, steps, and workout intensity. It’s water resistant, lets you track workouts and music, and will connect to your phone via Bluetooth. This all means it can complement your workout and other fitness tools to measure the inputs and outputs of all your workouts, and thereby keep you motivated!
Finally, the chest strap can directly measure the electrical impulse of your heartbeat to connect with the wristband and your phone in tracking your effort. It’s water resistant so it won’t be damaged when you get really sweat, and it automatically syncs with your phone. Overall, the UA Health Box is a complete package to complement the diet tracking you’d do on MyFitnessPal.
Withings Body + (Body Composition Scale)
Withings Body + is the next-generation smart scale from Withings that uses new technology for more accurate weight readings. The native app for the scale, Health Mate, is pretty comprehensive, but it is compatible with MyFitnessPal, able to sync all the data across. I like the trend screen which shows the previous 8 weigh-ins, so you can immediately see what your progress is like. If you use the Wifi connectivity it even gives a daily weather report so that you can “plan your outfit and day’s activities.” Interesting, but probably a bit of a novelty! Overall, this smart scale has interesting features and advanced metrics. It comes in white or black. The simpler and cheaper version of Withings Body + is called Withings Body, which only measures weight . Withings previously sold their bathroom scale business to Nokia and then bought it back again, so if you ever see the Nokia Body + or Body they are essentially the same products.

How to sync the scale’s app with MyFitnessPal
The process is generally straight forward – however sometimes you can initiate this process either from MyFitnessPal or from the scale’s app or from either side.
Syncing with MyFitnessPal from the smart scale app – example Weight Gurus
1. Go to integrations list
2. Authorize the data exchange:
3. That’s it – just wait for the data to start moving
Syncing data from MyFitnessPal
1. Go Apps & Devices in MyFitnessPal menu
2. Click on partner app you want to sync with
The truth is any of these scales would be useful when combined with MyFitnessPal. And in fact many smart scales are indeed compatible with MyFitnessPal, so this is by no means an exclusive list. If you truly want the most seamless and future-proofed smart scale for MyFitnessPal (and you have the budget for it) you might want to go for the UnderArmour’s very own UA scale, since they both belong to the UnderArmour family. Otherwise, any of these smart scales are a good option.
